Home is where the heart is

I recently flew to the other side of the world for a visit, a wedding and to remind myself that New Zealand is truly a great place to be! I already knew it in my head, but now I’m sure in my heart. Of course it helped that I was there for such a short time all I did was catch up with my favourite people, hang out at my favourite cafes/bars do fun stuff, eat and drink my favourite things [including this fabulous Jimmies pie]!

The weather also made the trip worth it. Autumn is wonderful in Christchurch and I found myself taking pictures of the Avon! I was seeing everything with fresh, touristy eyes.

I stayed with Susan and Israel at their flat in New Brighton and thoroughly enjoyed being close to the beach.

My sister Bonnie also lives and works in that area and I was able to help out at her café by rewriting the menu on the blackboards.

We travelled to Invercargill for the wedding of my friends Sonya and Joey. It was a brilliant excuse to get together with the girls that I’ve been friends with since high school. The hen night involved a treasure hunt on our old school grounds, and some activities in Queens Park plus dinner and a boogie at the Lone Star. It was fun to be in my hometown with my home girls, go dancing and not feel like it was “the asshole of the universe” [I believe Mick Jagger was quoted saying that about Invercargill].

The ceremony was in a lovely garden and the reception was in Otatara, where I used to live. They look so happy!

After a few more days in Christchurch I said farewell to my lovely friends [sadly the time went too fast] and stopped in Dubai for 2 days to visit Graham and Jo. This was a good way to end a holiday. I spent my days exploring the older part of the city, markets, mosques and beaches while Graham and Jo were at work, then we would all go out for some amazing food. They were excellent hosts. I feel like my trip was restful as well as productive, thanks to their advice, the only thing I would’ve done with more time is ride a camel!

Three weeks was not enough – but it was well worth it. This trip has taught me: it’s the people that make a place wonderful to live in. I am so fortunate to feel at home in both Scotland and New Zealand because of my quality friends. So thank you!
